Living on a canal narrowboat.

This section offers advice, tips and ideas about living on a canal narrow boat. Peter at Galleon Narrow Boats, the boatbuilder who lives on a canal narrowboatboat, will share the benefit of his experience in living on board a narrow boat on the canal.

With over ten years experience of living on a narrowboat Peter is the man to guide you.

There are two distinct types of canal dweller, the marina dweller and those free souls who "live on the cut" mooring up each night at a different location and endlessly wandering the canal system of England. There is a third way which is to live on the cut but at a canal side mooring. Cruising to new pastures whenever the fancy takes you returning to your mooring whenever you are ready.

Many people do live on a canal narrowboat and work in ordinary jobs commuting to work and back each day but living in the freedom of your own boat.

Grand Union Canal.

Galleon Narrowboats is located on the Grand Union Canal at Nether Heyford in Northamptonshire not far from the Crick tunnel and the Canal museum at Stoke Bruerne .

The Grand Union Canal is 137 miles long and runs from the river Thames at Brentford to Birmingham. The route includes 166 locks, more than one a mile but as they are sometimes found in flights there are some sections for gentle cruising.

For those of a less energetic frame of mind the Lancaster Canal, running from Preston in Lancashire north through Garstang and Lancaster to Carnforth provides 42 miles of lock free canal to cruise at your leisure.

The canal network of England clearly has something for everyone.
